And looking back, they really had dramatic lives! Kidnapped? Lost at Sea? Slam Book Fever? I was obviously obsessed, and in hindsight the series may have influenced me in ways I only now see. It was no secret by age 11 that I was the rebel and Julie was the good girl.. but reading these books (based on both a "good", studious and "bad" boy-crazy twin), made me feel ok about that, even good. For as far back as my memory goes I wanted to live in California.. (though, pretty soon after my interest in boys, gossip, heartbreak and cheerleading plateaued, I graduated to books about the Haight Ashbury scene, the Grateful Dead all living in one house and playing free shows in Golden Gate park on tons of acid). Then, the paintings, the color palate? They are amazing and I don't care if you think I'm crazy for saying that. I used to decide which ones I was interested in reading based solely on the cover painting.. And for better or worse this seems to be a metaphor for many of my choices through life, and my own artwork has aesthetic similarities. As I write this and upload all these images (organizing them has been a bit of an ongoing project) I chuckle while considering my lifelong inability (disinterest?) to read textbooks or do homework. Apparently ADHD did not apply to juicy pre-teen romance novels that I lovingly devoured. They were candy.
